The biggest reason to seek hearing protection is obviously, to protect your hearing. The most distressing part of hearing damage is tinnitus. This is a noise in your ear when there is no noise present. At some stage in our lives, most of us will experience a noise or a whistle in our ear which goes away after a short while. When it stays around, this is something which should be looked at.

The first step is a hearing test.

Warning signs

If you have tinnitus (noises in the ear) you should always discuss it with your doctor, or your hearing professional.

There are some times when this attention becomes urgent.

  • If you have tinnitus which is on one side,

  • If you have tinnitus which is ‘pulsing’

  • If you have tinnitus which came on suddenly or over a short time period

  • If you have tinnitus which is distressing.

In any of the above cases, SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!

Usually tinnitus is a relatively benign condition, but sometimes it can be a symptom or an early indication of something more serious.
